Abington Heights Class of 1988 Memorial Scholarship Fund Recipients
2010: Meredith Salmon
With a class rank of 14 out of 262, Meredith held an average of 98% after seven semesters of study. She was on the Honor Roll for all four years of high school and a member of the National Honor Society in her junior and senior years. As a Junior, Meredith attended the Honeywell Scholars Residential Classroom Program, a week-long international science and math program in Washington, DC. She was a four-year member of the Student Council and a two-year member of the Freshman Orientation Committee.
Meredith was extensively involved in the music program while at Abington playing in the Symphony Orchestra for four years and the Honors Orchestra for two years, earning awards at both the Regional and State level. She was a four-year member of the varsity soccer team and served as Captain during her junior year.
Meredith was also very active in the Abington community at large. She participated in numerous food drives for the Our Lady of Snows Roman Catholic church and was the chairman of the food committee at the Relay for Life. She was involved in many activities at the South Abington elementary School including holiday parties, field days and 4th grade violin concerts. Meredith was an active volunteer for the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation for the past four years.
Meredith will attend the Honors Program at Bloomsburg University and major in Secondary Education Biology.
2010: Michael Burke
With a class rank of 28 out of 262, Michael held an average of 97% after seven semesters of study. He was a two-year member of the National Honor Society, a Student of the Month, and he participated in the National Youth Leadership Conference. He also served on the Student Council for three years and tutored during his junior and senior years.
Michael was a member of the Symphony Orchestra and was a four-year member of the varsity baseball team, which was the 2009 PIAA AAA State Championship team. He also played in the basketball program for four years winning the District 2 Championship in 2010 and ran Cross Country as a freshman.
Michael was active in the Northeastern Pennsylvania community at large, serving for four years with The Friends of the Abington Community Library, the Allied Senior Center, and the St. Francis Soup Kitchen in Scranton while also volunteering with the Appalachian Service Project in his sophomore year.
Michael will attend Lehigh University and major in Engineering.
